The Schuhfabrik

It's actually not difficult to answer who or what we are: A socio-cultural center. Not just a bar! But who knows what that means? Come and see for yourself, you're warmly invited!

Once upon a time there were a handful of people who were too old for the youth center and too young for the sofa. They moved out to find a home where they could work, celebrate and argue together. The old building of the former Schuhfabrik on Königstrasse was just right for them. Unlike in the fairy tale of the Bremen Town Musicians, they didn't have to drive anyone away, because the house was empty and unused and was due to be torn down. But just like in the fairy tale, they stayed and brought more people in. Lots of people ensure that this house continues to be full of life. And what kind of people are they?

Punks behind the bar and men in ties in front of it, senior citizens on the stage and grandchildren in the audience, chess players in the noise of the pub and choirs among themselves, dancers and listeners, football fans and cinemagoers, women with headscarves and girls with piercings. There are people who work here; people who are involved here; people who enjoy themselves here.

They couldn't have known all this in 1984, but it happened that way and it was worth it. Everything is possible - alongside each other, with each other ... and sometimes against each other. It was and is not always easy to be an open house for everyone, for those who bring in money and for those who have nothing.

What will the future bring? It will remain colorful and unpredictable. New people will continue to come with new ideas, new enthusiasm and hopefully with tolerance for those they meet in the house. And they all have "nothing better to do". We are at home here and you are welcome! Any questions? Or suggestions? Write us your opinion or better yet, come by!
